He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
Admitted to Antietam Gen. Hospital, Smoketown, MD with wound of skull. Died there 10-19-1862. Buried in the Smoketown hospital graveyard near the batlefield at Sharpsburg, and probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
