Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted 20 May 1861 at Culpeper Courthouse in Company F, 7th Virginia Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
He died on 18 September at Israel Smith's farm. Originally buried "in Ben. Miller's field joining and east of John Highbarger's lot" on the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
