Before the Antietam Campaign:
He began his career in the Pittsburg, PA Post Office in 1840. In 1847 he volunteered in the Duquesne Grays, enlisting as a Private and served in Mexico. He returned to Pittsburg and in 1852 he was appointed Postmaster by President Franklin Pierce.

Early in 1861 he was Captain, Company D, 9th Pennsylvania Reserve Corps, and was elected Lt Colonel about when the regiment was organized in late June. He became Colonel of the Regiment when Col Jackson was promoted to lead the Brigade .

In the Antietam Campaign:
He assumed command of the Brigade (3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, I Corps) after Col Gallagher was wounded at South Mountain, Sept 14.

The remainder of the War:
Sometime after Antietam he was promoted Colonel, to date from 15 Jul 1862, but never served at that rank. He was discharged 10 Feb 1863 [some disgrace? drunkenness?].

After the War:
In 1866 he resumed service at the Post Office as Chief Clerk until 1872, when he resigned.
