Before Antietam

He left college before graduating, and joined his father's banking business. Mustered into service in the 9th Reserves as Captain, Company F, 25 Apr 1861 for 3 years. On the 20th of December, 1861, at Dranesville, Va., he was severely wounded but rejoined his company in Spring, 1862.

On the Campaign

He assumed command of the Regiment as senior officer on September 14th when LCol Anderson moved up to command the Brigade when Colonel Gallagher was wounded. Major Snodgrass was at the time sick in hospital at Washington.

The rest of the War

Continued ill health resulting from exposure and wounds, compelled his return home on sick leave. He resigned his commission there on 17 Feb 1863.

In July 1863, on Gen Lee's second foray North, "Gov. Curtin requested him to take charge of the organization and mustering into service of all the State troops west of the Allegheny Mountains, and at the request of the Secretary of War took command of the Fifth Regiment Pennsylvania Militia, and proceeded to New Creek, Va., where he assumed command of all the forces at that point, relieving Gen. Kelly. At the expiration of this service, he returned to private life."
(quoted from Bates, History of Crawford County, Pennsylvania - extract online)
