In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
Died in 1862 on Henry Reel's farm. Originally buried "in H. Reel's field west of his orchard along a stone wall" on the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
