He mustered as Private, Company A, 37th Virginia Infantry in Goodson (now Bristol), VA on 20 April 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of his wounds in Sharpsburg on 23 September and was originally buried "In Benj. Grave's [Grove's?] old orchard", near the battlefield. He was probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
