He enlisted as 4th Sergeant, Company G (later H), 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment on 19 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was slightly wounded at Snickers Gap on 18 July 1864, returned to duty by December 1864, and was with the regiment to the surrender at Appomattox in April 1865.

Pruett1 has him as Pvt. A.W. Maxell, a Maryland Campaign fatality buried at Washington Confederate Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD. Service details from Alabama.2 His wounding on South Mountain is from a casualty list for Rodes' Brigade in the Montgomery Weekly Advertiser of 8 October 1862.
