Before the Antietam Campaign:
A railroad worker, he enlisted in Company I, 17th Virginia Infantry on 23 May 1861 in Alexandria. He was captured in action on 30 June 1862 at Frayser's Farm, VA and exchanged.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
He died in a hospital on Israel Smith's Farm. Originally buried "in Ben. Miller's field joining and east of John Highbarger's lot" on the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
