Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a32 year old farmer on enlistment in May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
He died at J. H. Grove's farm (not dated). Originally buried "in Benj. Grave's young orchard on left hand side of road to Shepherdstown". Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
