Before the Antietam Campaign: He graduated from West Point in May 1861, initially assigned as 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Cavalry, but was almost immediately promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Battery D, 5th U.S. Artillery. 1 By Second Bull Run (August 1862) he was in command of the Battery.2 In the Antietam Campaign: In command of Battery "D", 4th US Artillery. The battery was part of Gen Porter's V Corps Artillery Reserve posted on the West Bank of the Antietam, giving long range support and counterbattery fire. The remainder of the War: He continued in command seeing action at Fredericksburg (December 1862),and Chancellorsville (May 1863).
