From Cabarrus County, he enlisted there as Private, Company B, 7th North Carolina Infantry on 22 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds at a field hospital near Sharpsburg, probably later in September 1862. He was originally buried on the field at Sharpsburg at the "the northern edge of Stephen Grove's woods" and probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
