Before the Antietam Campaign: From Bertie County, he enlisted in Company F, 5th North Carolina Infantry on 8 June 1861 at age 29. In the Antietam Campaign: He was reported killed, but actually mortally wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862. The remainder of the War: He died in a hospital in Frederick, MD about 11 weeks after he was wounded. Originally buried "on west side of and in the cemetery at Frederick."
