Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 19 year old farmer living with his sister Drucilla (Smith) and family on their small farm at Gatesville in Gates County, NC. He enlisted there on 20 January 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company E, 33rd North Carolina Infantry on 4 February.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded by a gunshot and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was treated at US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD but died there of wounds on 6 October 1862.
His mother Priscilla filed a claim for his final pay in December 1863.
