Age 16 (giving his age as 18), a farmhand on his father's farm in Scott County, he enlisted as Private, Company A, 48th Virginia Infantry in June 1861. He was elected 3rd Lieutenant in April 1862 and promoted 2nd Lieutenant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
