Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Company I, of the First West Virginia Cavalry on 16 October 1861 at its initial organization.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Captain on 1 April 1863 after Captain Harrison resigned, but was killed in action during the raid on Wytheville, Virginia in July of that year.
