Before the Antietam Campaign:
A 25 year old resident of New York City, he enrolled 5 May 1861 in the 20th New York Infantry, and mustered in as 2nd Lieutenant, Company G. He was promoted First Lieutenant on 1 May 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862.
