Before the Antietam Campaign:
He had pre-War service ( to as late as July 1861) - parhaps 5 years - in Company K of the 5th US Cavalry, of which he'd become 1st Sergeant. He was commissioned Captain of Company H of the 1st Maine on 8 October 1861 at age 31.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In command of the cavalry detachment serving as Fifth Corps HQ Escort - consisting of Companies M and H, 1st Maine Cavalry.

The remainder of the War:
He was killed in action at Aldie, Virginia - a cavalry fight near the beginning of what became the Gettysburg Campaign - 17 June 1863.
