Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was listed in the 1850 Census as a 34 year old (born c.1816) Ship Carpenter, living with his wife and three children in Baltimore.

He entered the service as Captain, Company A, Purnell Legion (MD) Infantry, August 24, 1861;
Promoted Major, April 8, 1862 and Lieutenant Colonel, July 23, 1862;
He succeeded Colonel William Purnell (who resigned Feb. 17, 1862) in command of the Infantry Regiment.

The remainder of the War:
He resigned December 5, 1862.
