Before the Antietam Campaign:
He gave his residence his age as 25 when he enlisted on 19 May 1861 as Private in Company K, 2nd South Carolina Infantry. He mustered in with the Brooks Artillery on its organization on 28 January 1862, and was detailed as artificer in the Quartermaster Department on 1 July 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was paroled at Appomattox Court House, April 9, 1865.
