Before the Antietam Campaign:
He mustered in with Brooks Artillery on its organization on 28 January 1862. He was sent to Chimborazo Hospital # 5, Richmond, VA, June 5, 1862, and transferred to Camp Winder June 17, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He re-enlisted at Beams Station, TN, December 28, 1863, and was paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA., April 9, 1865.
