Before the Antietam Campaign:
He gave his age as 20 when he enlisted May 9, 1861, in Company K, 2nd South Carolina Infantry. He then mustered in with Brooks Artillery on its organization on 28 January 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was again wounded at Gettysburg, PA and captured there on July 5, 1863. He was sent to Point Lookout Maryland, transferred to Fortress Monroe, March 2, 1864, and on the roster of ģenlisted men, rebel deserters, and refugees awaiting orders at Camp Distributionī in New York March 10, 1864. There is no further record.
