Before the Antietam Campaign:
He gave his age as 20 when he enlisted May 12, 1861 in Company K, 2nd South Carolina Infantry. He then mustered in as First Sergeant with the Brooks Artillery on its organization on January 28, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He wa appointed Ordinance Sergeant in October 1863, and re-enlisted as ì2nd. Lt.î at Beams Station, TN, December 28, 1863. He was wounded in the head slightly May 8, 1864, at Spotsylvania Court House, VA., and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA., April 9, 1865.
