Before the Antietam Campaign:
He gave his age as 26 when he enlisted May 9, 1861 in Company K, 2nd South Carolina Infantry, the mustered in with the Brooks Artillery on its organization on 28 January 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was killed in action at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863.
