Before the Antietam Campaign: A farmer, he was elected Captain of the "Clifton Grays", a militia Company organized in 1860 after John Brown's Harpers Ferry raid. On 16 May 1861 he and his company became part of the 28th Virginia Infantry. In June, at Manassas, they transferred as Company C to the 11th Virginia Infantry, and he continued as Captain.1 He was promoted to Major 23 May 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September, and was relieved in command by Captain Mitchell of Company A. The remainder of the War: He "never recovered from his wound", and resigned his commission on 12 October 1864.
