Before the Antietam Campaign:
Of Morgan County, Alabama, LCol Gayle was promoted to Colonel and command of the 12th Alabama on the death of his CO, Colonel Robert T. Jones at Seven Pines, VA (May 1862).

In the Antietam Campaign:
Col Gayle was killed while in command of his Regiment at Turner's Gap during the defense of that pass on September 14, as described by his Brigade Commander BGen Rodes.
