Before the Antietam Campaign:
He had been living in Macon County, Georgia, since 1854, and was appointed 1st Lieutenant, Company C, 12th Georgia Infantry (prob. June 1861), and was elected Captain 8 May 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He assumed command of the Regiment on September 17th as next senior officer on the death of Captain Rodgers.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted to Major on June 9, 1863, he fought at Gettysburg, and was captured at Spotsylvania Courthouse 12 May 1864. He was imprisoned at Fort Delaware, but exchanged in July 1864. He was wounded three times at Winchester, Virginia, on 19 September 1864, and died in a hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia, on the 30th.
