Before the Antietam Campaign: Probably from Bibb County, he was appointed Captain, Company H, at the organization of the 12th Georgia Infantry in June 1861.1 In the Antietam Campaign: In command of the Regiment, as he had been on the Penisular and 2nd Manassas Campaigns earlier in the year, he was killed in action at Sharpsburg on the 17th.2 He had the fingers of his left hand shot off and was then wounded in the thigh before the final shot to the back of his head.3 References, Sources, and other notes: His photograph is found in Voices3 from an original cased CDV owned by Mrs Lucille G Parrish in the Gregory A Coco Collection. His middle name is also found as Gustavous in family geneological records, as is his birth year. | |
