Before the Antietam Campaign: From Halifax County, he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 12th North Carolina Regiment on 25 April 1861. He was commissioned Captain of a Company of Halifax men - renamed Company I of the 12th Regiment in May1 - on 25 February 1862.
