Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Halifax County, he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 12th North Carolina Regiment on 25 April 1861. He was commissioned Captain of a Company of Halifax men - renamed Company I of the 12th Regiment in May1 - on 25 February 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was in command of the much depleted 12th Regiment at South Mountain and at Sharpsburg1.

The remainder of the War:
He resigned his commission on 21 November 1862.
