Before the Antietam Campaign:
Of Yorkville, SC, by early in 1862 he was Captain, Company A of the 12th, and was elected Major at the unit's initial organization in August.
He was reported wounded at Second Manassas.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Major McCorkle briefly assumed command of the regiment after Colonel Barnes was mortally wounded in a charge on Federal positions above the Lower Bridge at about 4pm on the 17th.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel after Sharpsburg, but resigned his commission in February 1863 on account of health.

After the War:
He bought a house in York County, SC, and was 'for many years' a County Probate Judge there.
