Before Sharpsburg

Of Yorkville, SC, he enrolled as Captain, Company A, 12th South Carolina Infantry on 20 August 1861, and was elected Major on 2 April 1862. He was slightly wounded in the leg at Groveton, VA on 29 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He briefly assumed command of the regiment after Colonel Barnes was mortally wounded in a charge on Federal positions above the Lower Bridge at Sharpsburg about 4pm on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was (probably) promoted to Lieutenant Colonel after Sharpsburg, but resigned his commission in February 1863 on account of health.

After the War

He bought a home in York County, SC, and was 'for many years' a County Probate Judge there.
