Before the Antietam Campaign: In 1860 he was a 29-year old lawyer, of some means, living alone at Louisa Courthouse, Virginia.1 He was elected Captain of Company D, the Louisa Blues, 13th Virginia Infantry, in the Army reorganization of April 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: In command of the Regiment as senior officer present.
