Before Sharpsburg

He applied for admission to the US Military Academy at West Point in 1857, but was not accepted, then was a student at VMI for 3 years in the class of 1863 (repeated freshman year). He helped raise a Company of troops and entered Confederate service at Milltown, Chambers County, AL as Captain of Company D, 14th Alabama Infantry on 15 July 1861. He was promoted to Major of the regiment on 2 August (to date from 8 July) 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment as senior officer present in Maryland in September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 3 October 1862, and was wounded at the Wilderness on 6 May 1864 and lost his left leg to amputation. He retired from active service on 25 March 1865.

After the War

He lived at least briefly among ex-pat Confederates in Brazil, then returned to his hometown of La Grange, GA.
