Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Gaston County, he enlisted on 1 May 1861 in Company M of the Sixteenth Infantry as First Sergeant. He was promoted to Captain of the Company on 16 June 1861. In the reorganization of the Regiment in April 1862 he was appointed Major, and on 31 May promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He commanded the Regiment in action at Harpers Ferry and at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted Colonel of the Regiment on 8 December 1863, and served with them to Appomattox in 1865. He was twice wounded during the War: at Gaines Mill (1862) and Chancellorsville (1863).

After the War:
He returned to Gaston County and was a planter. He served in the State Legislature for the 1872-76 term.
