He's mentioned as being "stunned, very deaf, in hospital" at Antietam in a 1 October 1862 letter from Francis Carpenter of Webster, published in The Webster Times, 4 Oct 1862 (Volume IV #29) - transcribed on Susan's Harnwell's 15th Massachusetts site. Age 22, a mechanic from Webster on enlistment in July 1862. Discharged on disability 8 October 1862 at Philadelphia, PA.
