Before the Antietam Campaign:
He practiced law and edited Danville's Democratic Appeal before the Civil War, and was elected the city's Commonwealth Attorney in September 1858.

The remainder of the War:
In October 1863 he was made provost-marshal of the city of Petersburg, and by the battle of the Wilderness (May 1864) he was Lt Colonel in command of the Regiment.

After the War:
He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and five succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1887) from Virginia.
