Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a clerk in Atlanta before the War. Captain of Company A, he took command of the Regiment at Second Manassas in absence of all the field officers, again briefly just before the Maryland campaign, and after the Antietam battle at the skirmish at the Potomac crossing near Shepherdstown.
