Before Sharpsburg

A 32 year old lawyer in Charlottesville, he mustered as Private, Company B, 19th Virginia Infantry at Charlottesville on 8 May 1861. He was commissioned First Lieutenant on 1 July 1861 and promoted to Captain on 28 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded the Regiment after Colonel Strange was killed on South Mountain on 14 September, but was ill and not present with his Company at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The rest of the War

He transferred to staff duty as Provost Marshal General, Longstreet's Corps on 30 January 1863, and was in that post for the rest of the War.

After the War

He resumed his law practice in Charlottesville and was Judge of the County Court from 1872-1884.
