Before the Antietam Campaign:
A lawyer from Fond du Lac, he enrolled as First Lieutenant, Company E, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 15 June 1861. He was appointed Captain of his Company on 18 September 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
