Before the Antietam Campaign: "The original field officers of the 20th Georgia Infantry were Colonel William Duncan Smith, Lieutenant-Colonel John B. Cumming, and Major John Augustus Jones. Colonel Smith was promoted to brigadier-general and ordered to Charleston, S.C., where he died of fever in October 1862. He was succeeded by John B. Cumming as Colonel of the Regiment".1 | |
