He enlisted in Company A, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 6 March 1862. He was wounded in action at Gaines’ Mill, VA on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 on South Mountain.

The rest of the War

Captured again in action at Winchester, VA on 21 July 1864 and held at Camp Chase, OH. He enlisted there on 22 April 1865 in the US Army, mustering into Company E, 5th US Volunteers for frontier service on 2 May. He mustered out at Fort Kearney, Nebraska Territory on 11 October 1866.
