He enlisted at age 25 in Orange County, NC in Company B, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 1 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 on South Mountain, MD.

The rest of the War

He was confined at Fort Delaware until exchanged 10 November 1862 at Aiken's Landing, VA. He "deserted and gave himself up" at South Mountain, MD on 26 June 1863 and was held at Fort Mifflin, PA. He escaped from there on 9 November 1863. Reported again as a deserter on 28 September 1864 near Waynesboro, VA.
