Before Sharpsburg

A farmer, he enlisted at age 24 in Orange County, NC in Company C, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 1 May 1861. He was wounded in action at First Manassas, VA on 21 July 1861. He was captured in action at Seven Pines, VA on 31 May 1862 and held at Fort Delaware until paroled and exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA on 5 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was absent on furlough for the duration of the War after Sharpsburg.
