Before the Antietam Campaign: He was practicing as a physician in Woodville, Mississippi at the start of the War. He was appointed Lieutenant, the Jeff Davis Guards - later Company D, of the 21st Mississippi Infantry - at Woodville in May 1861. The remainder of the War: He was killed in action, leading the 21st, at the battle of Cedar Creek (Va) 21 October 1864.
