John Hampton Sims, Jr.

He was a 27 year old physician in Woodville, Wilkinson County, MS at the start of the War. He was commissioned First Lieutenant of the Jeff Davis Guards - Company D of the 21st Mississippi Infantry - at Woodville on 22 May 1861 and mustered for Confederate service with them near Richmond, VA on 5 June. He was promoted to Captain later that month.

He commanded the regiment as senior officer present at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862. Colonel Humphreys rejoined the regiment near the end of the day.

He was promoted to Major of the regiment on 7 September 1863 (to date from 12 August) and to Lieutenant Colonel on 7 March 1864 ( from 28 October 1863). He was killed in action while leading the regiment at Cedar Creek, VA on 19 October 1864.
