Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Orange County, he enlisted at age 34 in Company C, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 1 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was captured in action at Falling Waters,MD on 14 July 1863 and confined at the Old Capital Prison in Washington, DC. He took the Oath of Allegiance in March 1864.
