Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Orange County, he enlisted at age 23 in Company C, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 1 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was captured in action at Rappahannock Station, VA on 7 November 1863 and held at Point Lookout, MD until 21 June 1865.
