Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was Captain, Company A, 22nd Georgia Infantry 31 August 1861, and was elected Major 2 June 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He relieved the wounded Colonel Jones in command of the Regiment, but was himself severely wounded at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
He resigned his commission due to disability on 16 July 1863.
