In 1860 he was a successful 41 year old lawyer in Augusta, GA. He enrolled at Camp McDonald, Big Shanty (now Kennesaw), GA on 31 August 1861 and was commissioned Captain of Company A, 22nd Georgia Infantry. He was elected Major of the regiment on 2 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He relieved the wounded Colonel Jones in command of the regiment at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, but was himself severely wounded there.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission due to disability on 16 July 1863.
