Before Sharpsburg
From Greensboro in Guilford County, he was commissioned Captain, Company E of the 22nd Regiment on May 1861. He was elected Major of the regiment on 13 June 1862 in the Army reorganization.
On the Campaign
He was senior officer present at Second Manassas and on the Maryland Campaign, and commanded the regiment there.
The rest of the War
He was promoted Lieutenant Colonel on 16 March 1863, but was killed in action at Chancellorsville on 3 May 1863.

Service information from Moore's Roster1. The photograph here is from one reproduced in Greensboro's Confederate Soldiers by Carol Moore (Arcadia Publishing, 2008; pg. 53). It is credited to the Greensboro Lodge No. 76, Earley W. Bridges.
His name is stated as Columbus C. Cole in many post-war references, including the Roster. His compiled service record at the US National Archives identifies him as Christopher Columbus Cole, the variant we use here. His burial place moved from the Old Methodist Cemetery to Green Hill (probably in 1917).
