Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was originally Lieutenant Colonel of the 23rd Georgia Infantry on its organization in September 1861, and was elected Colonel June 12, 1862 on the resignation of Colonel Hutcherson.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Colonel and commander of the 23rd Georgia Infantry regiment on the Maryland Campaign, he was killed on 17 September at "the head" of his troops. He had been cited for "especial credit" by brigade commander Colquitt for having "met and defeated the fiercest assaults of the enemy" at Turner's Gap on the 14th.
